First playoff appearance since 2016, swept by Eastern Washington in their last two matchups
Men’s WSU Club Hockey (4-12) secured its final playoff berth in the PAC-8 championship after beating the USC Trojans (5-11) on Jan. 20-21.
The Cougars, led by their season-leading scorer Jake Landers, will sneak into the playoffs for the first time since 2016, in which they were No. 4.
In their last games from January 27th to 28th WSU fell to eastern Washington 5-2 or 5-4.
In the first game of the weekend, WSU had help in the form of goals from forward Landers and defenseman Beamish. However, that wasn’t enough to match the Eagles’ forward Kaiser Reed, who scored four goals in the three thirds.
The Cougs refused to go down without a fight in Saturday’s final game, with Landers again scoring two goals by one goal alongside teammates Tucker Spino and Ian Gould. Their efforts would still not be enough to overthrow EMU.
The PAC-8 Championship Tournament will be held in Cheney from February 9th to 12th. WSU will play their first game of the tournament on February 10 at 1:00 p.m. against the University of Washington.
